MAX Pinot Noir 2019
Hailing from a daring planting nearly 15 years ago of vineyards fewer than ten miles from the Pacific Ocean, MAX Pinot Noir is a stunning expression of Pinot Noir that we believe makes it one of the highest quality, most interesting, and most original Pinot Noirs available at its price from anywhere in the world.
Maximiano Errazuriz founded Errazuriz in 1870 in the foothills of Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Andes Mountains and the Western Hemisphere. Recognizing that this valley, with its hot, dry summers and cool Pacific Ocean breezes, was ideal for growing grapes, he sent for the finest clones from France and with tenacity and perseverance transformed this barren land into a world-class vineyard. Today, the tradition of quality lives on with Don Maximiano’s descendant, Eduardo Chadwick.
The grapes that go into the MAX Pinot Noir come from cool climate vineyards in the Aconcagua Valley which are located in the western end of the valley and are noted for the Pacific Ocean’s cool breezes and early morning fog. The special conditions of nutrition and drainage of the diverse soils help control plant vigor, producing balanced fruit loads with small bunches and berries.
Grapes were hand-picked, double sorted, destemmend and crushed, then placed in open top stainless steel tanks. The grapes cold macerated for 3 to 5 days before fermentation. The wine was racked in French oak barrels (15% new) where it underwent malolactic fermentation and was aged for 11 months.
The 2019 season was dry and warm. It began with a shortfall of rains by the end of winter and beginning of spring. Nonetheless, the absence of rains ensured splendid sanitary conditions of our grapes. The harvest developed earlier as this was a warmer season than historical averages. The quality of our vineyards was demonstrated once again given the climatic fluctuations, droughts and high temperatures, delivering grapes of outstanding sanitary conditions and great concentration.
Intense cherry red color with ruby highlights. On the nose, it is fruity, reminiscent of raspberry, blueberry and attractive notes of rose petal, plus a balsamic touch that adds complexity. On the palate, it is consistent with its nose where the fruit gives way later to balsamic and spicy notes plus a light toasted note that reminds of its time in the French oak barrels. It is a wine with a good structure, soft and elegant tannins.
Environmentally friendly processes include using gravity instead of pumps to move wine, controlling temperatures with wind in underground ducts to avoid use of air conditioning, and using solar panels and special window glass to save energy.

MAX Sauvignon Blanc grapes come from the Manzanar Vineyard in Chile's newest appellation, Aconcagua Costa. Errazuriz' Chardonnay Aconcagua Costa (formerly referred to as the Wild Ferment Chardonnay) is recognized as perhaps the top Chardonnay from South America. Errazuriz ferments its best lots of Chardonnay using natural yeast. Natural fermentation starts slower than inoculated fermentation because the yeasts must grow to sufficient numbers to transform sugars into alcohol. During this period the yeasts produce by-products which add distinctive flavors and complexity to the wine.
