The New Classification of DOQ Priorat

In Decanter’s masterclass at the Decanter Spain and Portugal Fine Wine Encounter, Padro Ballesteros Torres MW compared the similarities between Priorat and Burgundy. While many are familiar with Burgundy, Spain’s Priorat region has a rich 800 year old history that is often overlooked. Recently, the region became the first Spanish appellation to adopt a comprehensive zoning approach, similar to that of Burgundy. The pyramid structure details village, vintage, premier and grand cru classifications in addition to the vinyas vellas classification for wines planted prior to 1945.  Torres writes that “The classification, instead of fixing a picture of the past, as Bordeaux and Burgundy do, creates the conditions upon which new producers can aspire to become icons.”

The piece includes are review of the Ferrer Bobet Vinyes Velles Seleccion Especial 2016which received an esteemed 95 points. The includes great praise, suggesting the wine is “made from centenarian vines in Porrera, planted on slate soils. Careful harvest and winemaking, with grain selection… The wine is tightly structured, but suavely textured, very long and delicious. A benchmark for old-vine wine: power and finesse in lovely balance.”
