Viñedo Chadwick: Maipo Valley, Chile

Viñedo Chadwick 2003

Viñedo Chadwick 2003, Maipo Valley

The 2003 vintage saw a cool spring that allowed deep development of roots and balanced canopy. Small, uniform grape development followed, a common feature in years that produce high concentration and quality. Moderate precipitation and near-average sunlight and heat combined for an excellent season that highlighted ripeness, robustness and concentration in the wine.

The deeply-colored wine shows classic intense flavors of the Alto Maipo Valley, namely ripe red and black fruit. An intense and complex wine, its elegant balance of fruit and oak is complemented by a pleasant touch of sweet spice. Though big and powerful on the palate, the fine quality of this wine's silky-smooth tannins lends it a sophistication and finesse that endures through its long, lingering finish.

“Concentrated but restrained, with currant, fig paste, coffee, sage, bittersweet cocoa and tobacco notes that glide rather than rumble on the palate.  Long, dark, winy finish.  Cabernet Sauvignon.” 92 Wine Spectator, February 2007

“Vinedo Chadwick, whose first vintage was 1999, is quickly gaining recognition as one of Chile’s icon wines.  The 32 acre vineyard is located in the Puente Alto along the northern bank of the Maipo River at the foothill of the Andes.  To date, every vintage has been composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and is typically aged for 18 months in new French oak.  The 2003 Vinedo Chadwick is opaque purple-colored.  It has a classy nose of pain grille, smoke, blueberry and blackberry liqueur.  This is followed by a flavorful, elegant wine with excellent integration of oak, tannin, and acidity.  This is a forward vintage which can be enjoyed now.  However, it will evolve for several years and drink well through 2020.” 91 Wine Advocate, June 2007
