Viñedo Chadwick: Maipo Valley, Chile
Viñedo Chadwick 2002, Maipo Valley
The growing season in 2001-02 had exceptional ripening conditions. While this vintage was rainy and problematic in most of the southern Regions of the Central Valley of Chile, the weather conditions in the Alto Maipo behaved completely differently. Less rain and good heat allowed for picking of the Cabernet Sauvignon lots at perfect ripeness. The result is a full-bodied wine with concentrated fruit characters and excellent structure. Intense red fruit aromas are complemented by integrated notes of toast, vanilla and cedar. On the palate, the wine is balanced and elegant. The tannins are powerful yet silky, creating a full mouthfeel and lingering finish. The wine is completely approachable now, and should gain in complexity for at least ten years.
2002 Vintage Reviews:
“This is a big, brawny tower of Cabernet power, with dark currant, loam and coffee flavors that are powerful, yet lush and well-integrated. Then the fruit opens up on the finish to reveal even more depth. Impressive length and focus too. Drink now through 2009.” 92 Wine Spectator, February 2005
