Telmo Rodriguez: Alicante, Castilla Leon, Malaga, Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Rueda, Toro and Valdeorras, Spain
Pago la Jara, Toro
The Telmo Rodriguez estate in Toro is named after a Spanish breed of bull that is both elegant and powerful. The 19th century lower-case “g” typeface that appears on all the Toro wines is transformed, and modernized, by a bull horn. Along with a few other notable winemakers, Telmo was one of the first to rediscover vineyards of decades-old, bush-trained vineyards. He was a major force in elevating Toro to one of the most in vogue wine regions of Spain. The distinctive red soils produce a Tinto de Toro (the local clone of Tempranillo) with tremendous fruit concentration, ripeness, acidity, tannins and structure.Pago la Jara is the flagship wine from Toro for Telmo Rodriguez. Vinified in upright oak fermentation vats, it typically sees around 18 months in new French barriques. Opulent and dense, but with trademark balance and seamless style, Pago la Jara represents the world-class level the terroir of Toro can achieve.
2005 Vintage Reviews:
“Inky violet. Concentrated blackberry and cassis aromas are complemented by oak spices, cola and musky underbrush. Vanillin oak come up with air and carries onto the palate, adding sweetness to the dark berry and cherry liqueur flavors. A broad yet juicy wine with seriously deep dark fruit flavors and surprisingly fresh finishing minerality. This is handling the oak with a sure hand.” 92 IWC Sept/Oct 2008
