Shaw + Smith: Adelaide Hills, Australia
Shiraz, Adelaide Hills
While Shiraz struggles to ripen in the cooler parts of the Adelaide Hills, it excels in the drier and warmer vineyards near Mt Barker and Macclesfield where Shaw + Smith source their fruit. This sub-area produces truly exciting “new wave” Shiraz – loads of pepper spice character but with palate weight to match. A modern cool-climate Shiraz with focused fruit.
2005 Vintage Reviews:
"Bright, lively and distinctive for its peppery, spicy plum flavors, which remain zesty and finish with refinement and class. Has impeccable balance. Not as rich and round as other Shiraz, but harmonious and ageworthy." 92 Wine Spectator, October 2007
"The 2005 Shiraz is deep purple with aromas of smoke, pepper, saddle leather, game, and blueberry. Medium- to full-bodied, this is a nicely balanced, elegantly styled Shiraz with well-concealed soft tannins, good depth and excellent concentration. It should evolve for several years and drink well through 2020." 90 Wine Advocate, December 2007
2004 Vintage Reviews
“Smooth, round and distinctly peppery. Supple, with a lighter feel than Shiraz from warmer regions. Offers licorice-scented blackberry and mineral flavors that linger effortlessly.” 91 Wine Spectator, October 2006
“Martin Shaw makes this wine with an emphasis on cool climate spice. It’s black and saturated, tightly framed by ferrous tannins that keep the wine savory and mouthwatering. The aromas evolve from gamey musk and dried herbs to tar and mushroom scents the next day, all lasting with bold intensity over the black plum and pomegranate flavor, an elegant bridge between the classical Northern Rhone syrah and South Australia.” 94 Wine and Spirits, February 2007
“Elegantly balanced and crafted; predominantly spicy red fruits, supported by fine, persistent tannins.” 94 James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2007
