Silval

Silval is declared only in very good years, and typically combines power, complexity and concentration with a  forward, fruity style, making it approachable when quite young, and ready to drink before the vintage Noval ports.  Made up of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cao, Touriga Francesca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca, grapes are from the estate and “A” category suppliers, and all trodden by foot in the lagares at Quinta do Noval.  The wine is then aged 20 months in old oak barrels of 640 liters or larger.

“The fruit rides on top, blackberry and plum ripeness over weighty, schist-driven tannins. It’s modern and supple, with a bit of the arid vintage showing through.” 90 Wine & Spirits, December 2007

“Black in color, with intense aromas of grilled meat, raisins and prunes. Full-bodied, lightly sweet and tannic. Chewy, with loads of black licorice on the finish.” 94 Wine Spectator, April 2006

"Floral scents of rose and esteva give this wine an immediate appeal. It would be approachable now but for its size and scale, the huge, plummy fruit and black satin texture more forgiving than the tannins. It's the salty minerality of those tannins that keeps the wine on track, lengthening the flavors into the distance so that they last a minute after each taste. The blend includes grapes from new plantings at Noval, as well as selections from growers. Silval '03 is close to the Noval in quality, and will likely be drinking best from 2020-'30." 94 Wine & Spirits, December 2005

Superdark and powerful. Shows raisin, spice, coffee and violet aromas. Full-bodied, very chewy, with lots of grip and loads of fruit. Very long in the mouth. Outstanding young Port. Supervalue here.” 94 Wine Spectator, May 2003
