Nicolas Joly: Loire, France
La Coulée de Serrant , Savennières-Coulée de Serrant
Considered one of France’s, and the world’s, great white wines, Coulée de Serrant makes up a single domain with its very own AOC. The vineyard is composed of 17 acres of Chenin Blanc on a schist hillside by the Loire River in the Savennières region. This wine (as with all the Joly wines) is not racked off its lees, does not undergo a cold temperature treatment or any temperature control, and it is not fined. Use of new oak is carefully limited and not to impart any flavors – each year about 3%-4% of barrels are replaced. The wine is racked frequently in order to bring it into contact with oxygen.
2004 Vintage Reviews
“The deep brass-colored 2004 Savennieres Coulee de Serrant offers a yet more unusual aromatic spectacle than the Clos de la Bergerie. Apricots and their kernels, quince paste, marzipan, jasmine, and daffodil-like, faintly stinky, musky floral notes are backed by animal and mineral nuances I find impossible to pin down. In the mouth, there is a satiny texture, salty, saliva-inducing mineral inflections, persistent musky florality, and high-toned inner-mouth esters. Salt, stone, quince paste, pistachio, honey and fruit pits dominate this densely-compressed wine’s impressively long finish.” 92 Wine Advocate, August 2007
