Marcel Deiss: Alsace, France
Riesling, Alsace
An elegant wine, with acidity and freshness that give a firm structure. Minerals, citrus, pineapple, stony fruits and earth notes emerge as it opens up.
“Given the tiny size of his 2005 crop and the synergistic potential in a marriage of chalk and granite terroirs, Deiss blended the fruits of Beblenheim and St.-Hippolyte for an excellent value 2005 Riesling. This displays pure aromas of apple, plum, grapefruit rind, and cassis, a refined, delicate palate that shows the effects of low (11.5%) alcohol and very gentle pressing, and a lip-smacking, juicy, refined, grapefruit-, apple-, and honey-dominated finish. There is a hint of sweetness, but it is so well integrated that the wine can pass for ‘dry.’” 90 Wine Advocate, February 2008
2004 Vintage Reviews
“Rich and refined, with peach, quince and stone notes playing off the bright structure. Dry and harmonious, this echoes the mineral theme on the lingering finish. Ideal for sole or trout, or baked ham. Drink now through 2012.” 90 Wine Spectator, January 2007
“Dry Alsace Riesling this good at this price doesn’t come along every day, so snap this one up while you can. Steely, minerally scents ally with ripe limes on the nose, then open up into richly layered waves of mineral, spice and green apple on the palate. Not rich or unctuous in texture, just nicely balanced from mineral start to long finish” 90 and Editor’s Choice Wine Enthusiast, August 2006
