Marcel Deiss: Alsace, France
Engelgarten, Alsace
The Engelgarten vineyard is a magnificent Graves terroir situated a cannon’s shot from the medieval fortifications of Bergheim. Because of its gravelly structure and deficit of water in September, it is possible to consistently obtain a full maturity of the grapes when the yield is limited. The character of Engelgarten thus flowers and dominates the varietals: rare complexity, warm character, distinct aromatic personality of macerated citrus and cooked orange peel, and the balance between strength and finesse that are always the foundation of a great wine. (Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Beurot, Muscat)2003 Vintage Reviews
“Pale yellow-straw color. Rather austere, spicy, Northern Rhone-like aromas of peach and pear skin and nuts. Then juicy, fresh and complex in the mouth, with pineapple, grapefruit and lemon flavors taking on greater richness and sweetness with air. Very ripe and fresh wine. I never would have picked it blind as a 2003.” 90 Tanzer, Nov/Dec 06
2003 Vintage Reviews
“Open and airy, this is supported by a lively structure. Beginning to show some secondary flavors of lanolin, citrus confit and mineral. Firms up on the finish, with a lingering citrus aftertaste. Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Auxerrois.” 90 Wine Spectator, October 2006
