Marcel Deiss: Alsace, France

Burg

Burg, Alsace

This wine comes from the Burg vineyard, whose geological characteristics (marl with some calcerous soils) and climate (wholly south-facing, protected by the valley) permits year after a year the development of a wine of great strength, complexity, structure and length. On the palate it is a wine of substantial weight, with minerality, and with the spice that is typical of marl plantings – cardamonm, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. (all 13 Alsace varietals are planted in the vineyard and used)

2003 Vintage Reviews
“An exotic, off-dry white, with a round mouthfeel showcasing the lychee, rose petal, grapefruit peel and white pepper flavors. Clearly defined by the firm structure and good acidity, with a honeyed note lingering on the zesty finish. Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Muscat and Sylvaner.” 90 Wine Spectator, November 2007

2002 Vintage Reviews
“Licorice and grilled almond complement the apricot and orange notes in this ripe, fleshy white. Balanced on the soft side, with enough acidity to keep it long and nimble. Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer.” 90 Wine Spectator, October 2006

“Big aromas of green pineapple, lemon, butter, tobacco and oak char. Layered flavors of apricot pit and orange marmalade starts sweet but dry out nicely in the soft, seamless finish.” 92 Wine News October/November 2006

“This contrasts its bold, stone-fruit ripeness against savory notes of sage, brown spices and dried meat, creating a harmonious and kinetic tension that persists through the racy finish. A fine, chalky minerality pins the whole thing down.” 91 Wine & Spirits, October 2006
