Altenberg de Bergheim

Altenberg de Bergheim, Alsace Grand Cru

The magnificent Altenberg vineyard is situated in the heart of a geologic fault area that combines hard Jurassic calcareous deposits and liassic marl strata. These formations, which are rich in fossils, have formed a spare clayey-calcareous soil that is red (ferrous) and rich in limestone rock. Here, the vine has to send its roots deep for energy; it is very warm, dry and nearly overheated. That maturity of the grape is often enhanced by noble rot and is exceptional. The site enhances the domination of the terroir on the planted varieties. (13 Alsatian grape varietals)

2003 Vintage Reviews:
“Exotic aromas of quince and mandarin orange, with captivating tangy lift. Fat, sweet and very rich, with superb power and lift in the mouth. Exotic hints of honeysuckle, lichee and brown spices. Finishes with superb length and vibrancy. An amazing 2003.” 93(+?) Stephen Tanzer, Nov/Dec 2006

"A round white, with peach, lychee, honey and mineral flavors. This is shy today, with a firm structure hiding things to come. There's well-defined acidity and a lingering floral note on the finish. Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Muscat and others." 91 Wine Spectator, November 2007

2002 Vintage Reviews:

“An opulent white. Noticeably sweet, yet offset by a vibrant structure, this sets the stage for apricot, orange peel, pine forest and mineral aromas and flavors that just won’t quit. Very intense and harmonious, with plenty in reserve. Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Sylvaner and Auxerrois. Drink now through 2015.” 93 Wine Spectator, January 2007
