Lucien Le Moine: Burgundy, France

Grand Cru

Grand Cru, Côte de Nuits Red

Richebourg
"Deep, bright red-ruby. Vibrant aromas of dark raspberry, violet, licorice and minerals. Thick but sappy, with superb density and a saline quality that leavens its sweet berry, mineral and floral flavors. This fills the mouth like few wines do in this vintage, but there's no impression of excess weight. Finishes with spherical, tongue-dusting tannins and superb lingering sweetness. 94 points Stephen Tanzer, Mar/Apr 2007

“This is rich, ripe and full of red cherry and floral aromas and flavors. The lush texture and well-integrated tannins are offset by a vibrant acidity. Seems approachable now, but this is dense and complex. Fine harmony and length. Best from 2010 through 2020.” 94 Wine Spectator, January 2007

“A superbly elegant and pure nose featuring dark pinot fruit and violet aromas of terrific complexity precede precise and almost racy flavors of exceptional freshness and vigor that explode on the hugely long finish. This is a gorgeous combination of style and grace yet with the barely concealed muscle and power of a fine Bonnes Mares. This will be accessible early yet the balance is so good that it should age well too.” 91-94 “Can’t Miss” Burghound, April 2006

Bonnes-Mares
“Deep red-ruby. Knockout nose combines cherry, dried flowers and sappy brown spices. Supersweet and concentrated, with outstanding depth and thrust to the primary berry, mineral and spice flavors. Boasts superb precision; great perfume and sweetness; and a palate-saturating finish I rarely found in this vintage. Very Bonnes-Mares, almost deceptively easy to taste today.” 94 Stephen Tanzer, Mar/Apr 2007

“This is packed with both fruit and terroir. Broad-shouldered and powerful, it exhibits blackberry, plum and mineral flavors matched to a fleshy texture and muscular structure. The tannins are ripe and the lasting impression is sweet fruit. Best from 2009 through 2025.” 93 Wine Spectator, January 2007

Clos de Vougeot
“A relatively expressive nose for a young Clos de Vougeot combines wood spice, earth, iron and a hint of game as well as precise, fresh and intense flavors that culminate in a the classic youthful austerity that characterizes this appellation. There is huge depth of material here and this is one stunning effort with an explosive finish that seems to go on and on. One of the very best examples from this vineyard in 2004.” 91-94 “Can’t Miss” Burghound, April 2006

“Good medium-deep red. Red cherry, raspberry and flowers on the nose. Sweet and succulent if a bit reduced and youthfully clenched. This opened nicely to reveal very good flesh and density, a rather pliant texture and dominant flavors of redcurrant and darker berries. Finishes very long, with silky, fine tannins.” 91 Stephen Tanzer, Mar/Apr 2007

“Fine depth to the ripe, almost candied blackberry and red currant flavors, and there's oak supporting the rich texture. It's on the soft side, with more structure from the ample tannins than acidity. A touch dry on the finish, but impressive. Best from 2009 through 2018.” 91 Wine Spectator, January 2007

Chambertin-Clos de Beze
“A beam of sweet cherry, spice and mineral shoots like a laser across the palate in this powerful yet racy red. Packed with fruit, this is all about fruit and terroir, with a terrific mineral aftertaste. The oak character emerges on the finish, yet it’s not oaky. Best from 2009 through 2020.” 95 Wine Spectator, January 2007

“A spicy, bright and pure nose of crushed wild berries and there is a distinctly animale component that adds nuance to the earthy and gamy flavors that are concentrated, harmonious, deep and wonderfully intense with a powerful and mouth coating finish. This is a big wine for the vintage with a robust and muscular character that manages to remain refined and indeed, even elegant. This will require time as it's quite firmly structured.” 92-94 “Can’t Miss” Burghound, April 2006

“Good dark red. Ineffable, noble aromas and flavors of raspberry, red cherry, violet, white pepper and minerals. Creamy-sweet and vibrant, with an uncanny suavity of texture and outstanding inner-mouth aromatic character. This has the energy of the vintage in spades. Finishes very long, with extremely fine tannins.” 93 points Stephen Tanzer, Mar/Apr 2007

Charmes-Chambertin
“Intriguing aromas of rich earth, olive and juniper pick up cherry and spice on the palate. Sweet and fleshy, with ripe tannins around the edges and lovely balance and harmony on the finish. Best from 2008 through 2018.” 94 Wine Spectator, January 2007

“A completely different nose with more emphasis on ripe and warm Gevrey earth, underbrush and higher-toned red pinot fruits blend into rich, full, sweet and exceptionally fresh and precise flavors that are generous yet admirably detailed and more minerally than one typically finds in a classic Charmes. This finishes with a racy and altogether harmonious backend if not the sheer depth of the Clos St. Denis.” 90-92 Burghound, April 2006

Clos de la Roche
“Good full red. Raspberry liqueur, pepper, mocha and iron on the compelling, somewhat high-toned nose. Thick, sweet and chewy, conveying a powerful impression of minerally, floral terroir Combines a wonderfully smooth texture with terrific grip. Best of all on the very long finish, which offers saline and rocky nuances, notes of red rose and minerals, and plenty of smooth tannins.” 92-94 Stephen Tanzer, Mar/Apr 2006

“Fragrant and opulent, this smells of Asian spices and tastes like macerated cherries and plums. It's rich and fleshy, with lovely fine tannins and sweet fruit. A completely beguiling '04 red Burgundy. Best from 2008 through 2020.” 93 Wine Spectator, January 2007

“There is a subtle note of reduction though again, it cannot block the wonderfully pure, elegant and expressive aromas of earth, leather, tea, spice and dark berry fruit aromas that introduce the slightly softer and exceptionally rich medium full flavors that are sweet, palate staining and wonderfully long. The tannins are firm and dusty though buried in the powerful yet stylish finish. An impressive effort by any standard. Decant first.” 92 Burghound, April 2006

Clos Saint Denis
“slight touch of reduction cannot hide the wonderfully spicy, complex, layered and earthy aromas that complement perfectly the very rich, full and notably ripe flavors that culminate in a velvety, sweet and palate drenching finish. This is a very concentrated wine by the standards of the vintage and the old vine intensity, concentration and depth are seriously impressive. Lovely.” 91-93 Burghound, April 2006

“Good deep red. Complex nose combines black raspberry, smoked meat, coffee and mocha. Like liquid silk, but with surprising acidity giving shape to the flavors of black raspberry and dried rose. This has real grand cru velvety texture and volume. Finishes long and firm, with notes of spices, grilled meat and licorice.” 90-93 points Stephen Tanzer, Mar/Apr 2006

"The nose is slightly candied, but this is seductive and exotic, with preserved cherry, mineral and spice notes, bright acidity and good grip on the nice, licorice-tinged finish.  Best from 2009 through 2018. 91 Wine Spectator, April 2007

Echézeaux
“Dark and brooding, this red is full of plum, black cherry, herb and animal aromas and flavors. There's also coffee and spice and, as it evolves on the palate, this becomes more civilized, showing sweet fruit and menthol notes. Very distinctive, vibrant and dense, with a long, sweet, spicy finish. Best from 2009 through 2020.” 93 Wine Spectator, January 2007

“Deep, bright red-ruby. Primary aromas of red cherry, violet, dried rose and minerals. Juicy, scented and tactile, with very good density and focus to the red fruit and mineral flavors. Pliant, broad and rich, finishing with substantial but thoroughly ripe tannins. A lovely example of this grand cru.” 91 Stephen Tanzer, Mar/Apr 2007

Mazis Chambertin
“A core of black currant and raspberry offsets the dense tannins in this intense yet elegant ’04. Vibrant and long, with the tannins emerging on the finish. Tightly wound. Needs time to resolve itself. Best from 2009 through 2020.” 95 Wine Spectator, January 2007

“The barest hint of reduction detracts only marginally from the spicy nose of underbrush, earth and a touch of the sauvage which continues onto the intense, robust, powerful and textured flavors that display at once both precise yet a velvety quality which expands on the wonderfully long finish. This is a ripe '04 as there are notes of mocha and of toasty oak on the sweet backend.” 91-93 Burghound, April 2006

“Deep red. Black cherry and minerals dominate the nose. Sweet, lush and spicy, with penetrating but surprisingly accessible fruit flavors of dark cherry, blackberry, minerals and spices lifted by the new oak component. There's an exotic character to this wine but plenty of underlying power. Not at all a gamey style of Mazis.” 91 Stephen Tanzer, Mar/Apr 2007
