Errazuriz: Aconcagua Valley, Casablanca Valley and Curico Valley, Chile
Max Reserva Merlot, Aconcagua Valley
The Max Reserva Merlot also comes form the Don Maximiano vineyards in the Aconcagua Valley, from two lots, one that was planted in 1978 on a granite soil profile, and one in 1993 on clay soils. Both sites are low vigor, forcing the vines to struggle, yielding around 3.6 tons of fruit per acre. In addition, 10% Carmenere from the Maximiano vineyards was included in the final blend, adding fruit and structural complexity. In 2005 the Aconcagua Valley saw nearly perfect conditions, with no significant rainfall during fruit ripening and, despite some temperature peaks in February, March and April, only moderate maximum temperatures. The grapes were hand-picked and sorted, with total maceration time varying from 22 to 32 days. The wine was then aged for 12 months in 50% new oak barrels (65% French and 35% American).
The attractive ruby color displays violet edges. The complex aroma is layered and features red cherries, raspberries and strawberries, delicately decorated with hues of sweet spicy vanilla and cinnamon. In the mouth the wine features a gorgeous texture with vigorous yet elegant tannins that caress the palate and prolong the flavors into a pleasant and elegant finish.
