Montepergoli

Montepergoli, Bolgheri

The wine was produced from a strict selection of grapes and must from four varieties: Merlot (40%), Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Syrah (20%) and Sangiovese (5%). To achieve a perfect harmony between the vine and terroir, the entire vineyard is organically farmed. The grapes were vinified separately with a prolonged maceration period of 20-28 days. Temperature-controlled fermentation was followed by malolactic in French barrique with an additional 18 months of aging. Each vintage is held for a minimum of 6 months in bottle prior to release. Only 1,200 cases of this wine were produced.

2003 Vintage Reviews:
“Aromas of blackberry, mineral and coffee. Full-bodied, with big, velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Juicy and concentrated. New world in Bolgheri. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese and Syrah.” 92 Wine Spectator, October 2006

2001 Vintage Reviews:
The 2001 Bolgheri Rosso Montepergoli, just as in the 2000 vintage, is one of the best wines of the entire appellation. Very deep and brilliant in color, its amply-spiced nose and powerfully expansive aromas of smoky creme de cassis and plums is followed by rich, layered flavors of perfectly ripe berry fruit, tar, river gravel, and cedar, and is lush, dense, and very long. Drink: 2005-2020.” 93 Wine Advocate, April 2004

Montepergoli ‘01 had us sitting up in our seats. This oenological gem offers a very stylish, intense bouquet of red berry fruit, light balsamic notes and already perfectly integrated oak. The palate has excellent body, but what struck us was the finesse of the extract. The tannins are velvety and well incorporated into the wine, providing a pleasing sensation, but also conveying distinct character and grip without excess. In winemaking terms this is something like geometry’s squaring of the circle. It is also an indication of a mastery of vinification technique, and of the superlative quality of the grapes that have gone into the wine, in this case Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Syrah and Sangiovese.” 3 Glasses Gambero Rosso 2004 Guide
