Delta Vineyard: Marlborough, New Zealand
Delta Vineyard Pinot Noir, Marlborough
The Delta Vineyard, situated to the west of Blenheim on the southern hills of Marlborough, is planted solely to the latest Dijon clones of Pinot Noir. The clay soils in the vineyard, combined with the elevation and Marlborough’s temperate climate, make this site ideal for growing top quality Pinot Noir. The fruit is handpicked into open top fermenters. After a 5 day cold soak fermentation takes place with frequent hand plunging. The wine is then pressed with 20% left on skins for a further week before racking to French oak barrels (40%) and stainless steel tanks, and left to age for 11 months prior to bottling. The wine has lovely depth and vibrant color, with a perfumed nose that mingles aromas of black cherries with a floral note that gives way to supple yet vibrant fruit on the palate.
2005 Vintage Reviews:
“An excellent value in Pinot Noir, this wine is made by Matt Thomson, also chief winemaker for Saint Clair. It’s dark and beefy in color, with brooding black cherry fruit on the nose that freshens a bit on the palate, adding beet notes and subtle shadings of herb and spice. Nicely balanced, with a long, silky finish.” 89 Wine Enthusiast, August 2006
