Delta Vineyard: Marlborough, New Zealand
Delta is a new project established to produce some of the finest Pinot Noir from New Zealand. The site is a unique and extraordinary property perfectly adapted to Pinot Noir, overseen by well known New Zealand winemaker Matt Thomson.
The Delta vineyard and winery are so named because of the shape of the vineyard, a triangular piece of land that rises from the ground, bringing to mind the symbol for the Greek letter 'Delta'. The 100 Delta acre vineyard is planted on a former airstrip that rises to 525 feet (one of the highest vineyard locations in Marlborough). The vineyard is planted on clay soils ideal for Pinot Noir, distinguishing the site from the sandy soils that prevail in Marlborough and are more suited for Sauvignon Blanc. The elevation, slopes, clay soils, and exposition of Delta’s unique site are complemented by cooling breezes from the New Zealand Alps to the southwest to allow slow and perfect maturation of the fruit. This particular site led winemaker Matt Thomson to Marlborough. Matt is originally from Central Otago, a recently popular area for New Zealand Pinot Noir, but chose to pursue his Pinot Noir ambitions in Marlborough after discovering the Delta site.
The Delta philosophy is to produce Pinot Noir with vibrant fruit, good tannin structure, excellent acidity and well integrated, subtle oak. The owners are winemaker Matt Thompson, who also consults for other prominent New Zealand wineries, and David Gleave, Master of Wine and Managing Director of UK wine importer Liberty Wines.
