Il Bosco

Il Bosco, Cortona

Il Bosco, which is 100% Syrah, comes from grapes harvested from the estate’s hillside vineyards. These vineyards, planted between 1988 and 1995, have a density of more than 7,000 vines per hectare. The yield per hectare is typically only 5.5 tons of grapes (only 2.2 tons per acre). This low yield per vine is reached by means of a green harvest (pruning of clusters) at the end of July, which allows a wine with high concentration, deep fruity tones, and notes of pepper and spice. At the end of the malolactic fermentation, which takes place in barrel, the wine remains in oak for twelve months (six months in new oak barrels and six months in 1-year-old oak barrels).

2004 Vintage Reviews:
“Complex yet refined aromas of blackberry, mineral and flowers follow through to a full-bodied palate, with sikly tannins and a long, caressing finish.  Peppery and fruity.  Delicious.” 93 Wine Spectator, October 2007

“The 2004 Cortona Syrah Il Bosco offers wonderful aromas of spices and sweet toasted oak that give way to layers of small red fruit, earthiness and mint flavors.  It shows outstanding depth in a linear, pure style with a vibrant, generous personality, plenty of concentration and fine tannins to round out the finish.  It is a terrific effort from D’Alessandro.” 92 Wine Advocate, June 2007

2003 Vintage Reviews:
“Powerful aromas of crushed black fruits, pepper and wet earth; just a hint of roasted meat. Full-bodied, chewy and rich, with a long, long finish. This is a fantastic Syrah. Like a great Hermitage.” 94 Wine Spectator and #14 of Top 100 for 2005
