Pavillon Rouge 2003

Pavillon Rouge 2003, Margaux

This exceptional vintage produced one of the best Pavillon Rouge ever made.  As usual, there are a number of reasons for a successful wine, but it is important to stress the equal success of the four grape varieties.  The high quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot were not surprising in such a vintage, but the Merlot was a major suprise -- Château Margaux feels it was the best Merlot they had since 1985.

"A terrific, value-priced second wine, the 2003 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux (150,000 bottles produced) may be the finest example of this cuvee I have yet tasted. Its dense ruby/purple hue is followed by creamy aromas of cassis, vanilla, flowers, and licorice. Round, generous, savory, expansive, and amazingly long as well as concentrated, I even joked with Paul Pontallier that this could get him fired as perhaps the selection was too severe!”  92 Wine Advocate, April 2006

"Aromas of blackberry and lightly toasted oak follow through to a full-bodied palate, with chewy tannins and a rich, fruity aftertaste of plum, berry and vanilla. All there. Solid wine. Second wine of Margaux.” 92 Wine Spectator, March 2006
