Pinot Noir La Encantada

Pinot Noir La Encantada, Santa Rita Hills

Planted in 2000 close to the western end of the Santa Rita Hills AVA, this 100-acre vineyard is home to six different Pinot Noir clones. This is the first vintage release from the vineyard. Bold, smooth and spicy, this is a Pinot Noir for the aficionado. It has wonderful depth, a balanced structure and richness of flavor complemented by sturdy acidity that results in a great wine worthy of cellaring.

2005 Vintage Reviews:
“Medium red. Smoky, herb-kissed redcurrant and cherry on the nose, with nervy minerality adding energy. Clean and brisk, with lively red fruit flavors, tangy mineral lift and an exotic blood orange quality on the finish. I really like the clarity and finesse of this elegant, light-bodied (13.5% alcohol) pinot.” 90 points IWC, Nov/Dec 2007

“From Richard Sanford’s new brand and vineyard comes this earthy, slightly rustic Pinot Noir. A praiseworthy Pinot rich in cherry, cola, coffee and pomegranate flavors accented by a crisp minerality. Do not be put off by the screwcap. The winery deserves great credit for taking this step.” 90 Wine Enthusiast, April 2007

2004 Vintage Reviews:
“This is the first launch of Richard Sanford’s new brand. The pioneering Santa Barbara vintner is no longer connected with Sanford Winery. It’s an impressive start. Power defines the wine, which detonates with explosive cherry-berry and cocoa fruit and oak, wrapped into a silky, velvety texture. It’s drinkable now, but it’s likely to age well for the next eight years.” 92 Points and Cellar Selection, Wine Enthusiast, November 2006

“Sleek and structured, with a tight beam of herb, citrus and anise-laced wild berry and black cherry fruit. Acidity keeps the flavors firm and vivid, finishing with wild berry fruit.” 91 Wine Spectator, May 2006

“Concentrated aromas of cherry, dust, tobacco and minerals. Quite spicy, though well-balanced flavors of cherry, raspberry and mocha. Nervy finish.” 91 Wine & Spirits, August 2006
